In September and October, doctoral student Jana Firse from Ruralia Institute joined Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands for a research visit, supported by a MUC travel grant. Jana returns with new connections in the field of food systems research, exciting plans for new research, and fond memories of inspiring excursions. Jana’s research visit builds on the existing collaboration between the Ruralia Institute and the Farming Systems Ecology group at Wageningen University & Research. During her two-month stay, Jana connected with the team of researchers in the group, learned about their interdisciplinary approach to farming and food system research, and gained valuable insights for her own research on circularity in the Finnish food system. Many of her discussions centred around how sustainable food systems can support rural prosperity and resilience. Next to this fruitful exchange with Wageningen researchers, Jana also had the chance present her work in a lecture for Master students, taking them on a virtual excursion to Finland. In return, she got to visit two inspiring examples of organic farming in the Netherlands, where she learnt about foundations providing access to land for new-entrant farmers and the lock-ins of dairy farmers in transition to organic farming. The collaboration between Ruralia Institute and Wageningen University will continue through various forms in the future and Jana’s PhD, jointly supervised by the two institutions, is part of this partnership. |
