Hi, my name’s Kiran Treloar Best, I am a British National with English and Indian background raised in Germany. I am also a third-year International Business student at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. When the opportunity for an exchange in Mikkeli, Finland, at the Aalto Business University’s satellite campus first came across my radar, I must admit, I was filled with skepticism. Until about a month before my departure, I had mistakenly assumed that I would be attending the Aalto Helsinki campus. While thinking about Mikkeli, my imagination conjured images of a small, isolated town with limited activities. However, little did I know that this journey would unfold into an incredibly enriching and unforgettable experience.
As I arrived, the chilly and dark winter embraced me. Yet, to my pleasant surprise, a friendly student warmly welcomed me and assisted me in finding my apartment. It was not long before I realized that the staff and fellow students were incredibly approachable and helpful, making my first impression of Mikkeli a positive one. As the first course commenced, forging connections and engaging in conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds came effortlessly. With time, these interactions blossomed into true friendships, and I cherished the hope that they would endure beyond the exchange, transforming my experience into an unforgettable adventure.
Contrary to my initial misconceptions, Mikkeli had much to offer in terms of engaging activities. The student union took the lead in organizing a plethora of weekly events that wholeheartedly welcomed exchange students and new faces. Through these gatherings, I found myself immersing in Finnish culture and forming bonds with both locals and fellow international students.
Beyond the realm of academics, Mikkeli boasted a vibrant social scene that catered to diverse interests. Sports enthusiasts found their place in several sports clubs, which not only fostered active living but also provided an avenue to meet like-minded individuals. Personally, I took a liking to a karaoke bar, Estrada, which quickly became my favorite hangout spot in the winter. Additionally, the billiards and bowling place Keilakukko offered countless evenings of entertainment.
With the change of seasons from winter to spring and the eventual arrival of summer, Mikkeli unveiled its outdoor charm. The nearby forest called out with its scenic trails, inviting walks, and refreshing runs in the beautiful nature surrounding Mikkeli. Alongside, the picturesque lake, Pankalampi, emerged as a popular destination for swimming and grilling sessions.
One of the most rewarding experiences of my exchange was joining the local boxing club called Mikkelin Taistelutoverit. Beyond the thrill of the sport itself, I found camaraderie among its members, creating a unique and exhilarating connection with the local community.
In conclusion, my exchange in Mikkeli far surpassed my initial expectations. The city and the Aalto Business University’s satellite campus provided an environment that fostered personal growth and self-discovery. Although the dark and cold winter may have appeared daunting at first, the warmth of friendship and the abundance of activities swiftly transformed my skepticism into genuine admiration.
This cherished experience will forever hold a place in my heart. To anyone contemplating an exchange in Mikkeli, I wholeheartedly encourage you to embrace the adventure. Beyond its exterior, this unique Finnish gem conceals a treasure trove of unforgettable memories and invaluable friendships waiting to be discovered.
